Hobgoblin Frame

A Airborn?

Hobgoblin występuje w przyrodzie w dwóch odmianach: stonowanym granacie i agresywnej pomarańczy. Do wyboru mamy aż cztery rozmiary: 15/17/19/21".

Hobgoblin2

Otóż wysłuchano niektórych dobrych rad i wstawiono główkę "tapered", celem usztywnienia frontu i zwiększenia precyzji prowadzenia.

Prosto i elegancko!.

Ciekaw jestem ile kosztuje sprowadzenie jednej sztuki do Polska, bowiem istnieje cień szansy, że jeden z "cichociemnych" zostanie zrzucony celem odbycia testów.

AIRBORN - NOW ON TWO SPRINGS

Air reconnaissance reported the concentration of the 29th commando regiment light artillery. This time abondon hope - there will be a lot of casualties. The opponent has the support of the latest  rigid  and “fully suspended” weapons.

Michal Smieszek

Military gets new armament. Society arms and so does Airborn. The American company has so far had no special equipment regarding big wheels.  Even though the offer was quite interesting – there were only two 29 inch hardtails: The Goblin and theGuardian, on which I have written-up last year. But let me just say that what distinguishes Airborn from among the many others on American continent, is the will to satisfy the needs of the less well-off society. Shortly saying, Airborn is just like Polish “Mbike” or “Kross”. Relatively cheap, but decent, and with positive ideas.

Apparently guys from Airborn are doing well as they decided to invest in a "new" technologies, or otherwise - refresh the current collection. In addition, customers clearly indicated what they want: a 29er fully, which in fact was long awaited. And finally we have almost 2013. However, the first leaks appeared in the summer – mainly on Facebook. We could see a raw aluminum frame with two springs and some teasing comments.

Alright! I will no longer keep you all in the dark (and if I do, then you might get upset and click to some other webpage). So, there it is! Now on sale - the latest airborne child - Hobgoblin.

The machine has been qualified to the XC group, but I think it is closer to the "Trail" category. Even though, 100mm of travel in front and rear, and the geometry do not show that you can attend RedBull Rampage, I am almost sure that Hobgoblin can be easily tuned for more hardcore action. Admittedly, the designers managed to combine at least two things: the relative simplicity and the original appearance. This is not one of the thousand of bikes that can be found on the streets and in parks, but still not one that is the work of Michelangelo. And God bless us for that!

The frame has been built from butted AL7005. And the makers did their best to include as many elements of the current trends. On board you will find hidden derailleurs cables, BB30 Press-Fit bottom bracket, tapered head, direct mount type front derailleur (forced by the design of the suspension). Oh well… springs – I am having a deja vu... where have I seen it? Got it, but I will not tell! Just a little clue - an Italian – Bulgarian co-operation…

For those who do not read all my scribbles, I give a hint that it is the next version of "floating" damper attached to only two moving elements: the upper and lower arm. The whole moves inside the hollow seat tube.  The specific attachment of this shock causes compression of the shock absorber from both directions simultaneously,  which in turn provides an increase in sensitivity and the flexibility of the suspension. As a result, rider almost does not feel unwanted chain tension while passing through obstacles or braking, and suspension is still active. The optimized position of the pivot points significantly reduces pumping and makes the system extremely stiff and effective. One company with a similar system from Waterloo calls such design "Full Floater,  and there is another one from “the other end of the world" who names it “Floating Shock Suspension”. And what about Airborn? Well, it is still “top secret”,  but they are like Delta Force and MiB in one. Never mind the names….

Airborn engineers have used a proven geometry – it is built on the solid values

A Frame Size 15" 17" 19" 21"
B Actual Top Tube Length (cm) 55.5 57.2 59.0 61.2
C Effective Top Tube Length (cm) 58.0 60.0 62.0 64.0
D Seat Tube Angle (with sagged fork ) 74° 74° 74° 74°
E Head Tube Angle (with sagged fork) 71° 71° 71° 71°
F Head Tube Length 106mm 115mm 125mm 135mm
G Fork Offset 45mm 45mm 45mm 45mm
H Chain Stay Length (cm) 45 45 45 45
I Wheel Base (cm) 110.7 112.7 114.7 116.7
  Crank Length 175mm 175mm 175mm 175mm
  Bar Width 640mm 640mm 640mm 640mm
  Stem Length 90mm 105mm 105mm 120mm

It seems that this time the Americans have abandoned a nice green color. Hobgoblin occurs in nature in two varieties: a gentle dark blue and aggressive orange. We can choose from as many as four sizes: 15/17/19/21". The most important thing here - you can buy just a frameset, for only 879.95 USD + shipment and tax, or fully assembled bike for 1749.95USD.

It is worth considering the option # 2. The owner will receive a Rock Shox duet  - Reba RL 100mm and Monarch RL. In addition, Airborn serves full SRAM X7 group (2x10sp), wheels built of WTB Speed Disc i23 rims and KT hubs and armored with rubber Aka 2.2 " slippers from Geax. A bit of comfort will be offered by Selle San Marco Ponza Power saddle and braking power will come from Avid Elixir brakes. The rest are the budget components signed with company’s own logo.

But that's not all! Gentlemen of Airborn showed not only one new fully frame & bike.  Lucky for us all they also refreshed sympathetic Goblin -  an XC hardtail. Old Goblin is still on sale, so a new revision was called simply "NEW GOBLIN". What separates the old from the new? Well, guys from Airborn are a good listeners of their customers’ advices and so implemented "tapered" head to stiffen the front and increase the steering precision. Secondly, they increased rear tire clearance - now you can easily push the tire 2.3 there. And thirdly, geometry is now optimized geometry to meet  100mm of travel (previously 80mm)

Finally, gentlemen from Airborn did not forget about the beautiful ladies who love a big wheels (like our team colleague Dorothy), but aren’t as tall as guys are. 16 inch frame has now bended top tube that provides extra room. Simply and elegantly!

Goblin a year ago was an attractive proposition. Fortunately, nothing will change in 2013! For $ 1200 you will get a bike armed with  Reba RL, complete SRAM X7 2x10 drivetrain, Avid Elixir brakes, WTB Speed Disc I23 wheels and Aka Geax tires. A very good deal in my opinion. I wonder how much it would costs to bring one piece to Poland. To be honest I hope that one of the “Airborn” troops might get dropped one day to undergo severe tests in our Polish conditions.
